Must-Have PS4 Accessories

What are the PS4 accessories you can’t live without?

If you’re picking up a PlayStation 4 console this holiday season, have you thought about what accessories to purchase along with your new toy? Everything you need to get started with the console is included in the box, but you may want a few extra accessories, like more controllers. Here’s a list of what comes with your PS4:

  • 500 GB removable hard drive
  • One (1) DualShock 4 wireless controller
  • Wired mono earbud
  • 30 days of free PS+ service (required for online play. With PS+, you also get two free downloadable games every month. November 2013 games are Resogun and Contrast.)
  • All cables required for hookup (HDMI, power cable) Does not include an Ethernet cable for wired Internet connection, but if you have a wireless setup, this doesn’t matter.

Now, let’s take a look at the accessories you’ll need to make your next-gen console complete. Click on an item to learn more about it and purchase on Amazon.

1. PlayStation 4 cameraps4cam

Unlike the Xbox One, the PS4 doesn’t come with an integrated camera, so you’ll need to buy one separately if you want voice detection and motion controls. The PlayStation Camera works in conjunction with the DualShock 4 controller’s light bar to precisely track your position in games that allow motion detection. The camera also handles voice recognition, so players can issue voice commands to their computer-controlled squad or communicate with online teammates.

The camera features a picture-in-picture mode, which allows you to put your face on the screen when you’re playing with friends or even recording gameplay footage to upload online. This little camera is small and sleek, so it will fit in great with your TV, entertainment center, and new PS4. Right now, it’s only being offered in black, but more colors are possible in the future.

The PS4 camera retails for $59.99 and will release alongside the PlayStation 4 on November 13, 2013. You can order the camera now directly from Amazon.

2. DualShock 4 controllerps4cont

The DualShock 4 wireless controller is arguably Sony’s best yet. The entire controller has been revamped to provide gamers with a more responsive and comfortable playing experience. The controller comes with a built-in jack for wired headsets, as well as an integrated speaker. Also prominently featured is the multi-touch pad that will allow you to control games in a new way.

The controller features the new “Share” button. With a press of this button, you can instantly live-stream your gameplay over the Internet or upload it to your social networks. It’s compatible with videos and screenshots you’ve recorded with the previously mentioned PlayStation 4 Camera.

Since the PS4 comes with just one controller, you’ll need at least one more if you plan to enjoy local co-op games with friends or family. The DualShock 4 controller is priced at $59.99 retail. Like the camera, you can pick it up when the console releases on November 13. To order from Amazon, click here.

3. Headsetpla

Yes, the PS4 comes with a headset, but its sound quality can’t match that of products from companies like Turtle Beach or Mad Catz. Sony has said that almost any current headset that works on the PlayStation 3 will also work on PS4. That means you can save a bundle by purchasing an older high-quality model, like the Turtle Beach Ear Force PLa Gaming Headset (Amazon link). This nifty headset does everything you need, has a 4 1/2 star review on Amazon, and retails for under $40.

Games you get include XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Little Big Planet Karting, Wipeout 2028 and Gravity Rush.psplus Every month, you’ll also be able to download a new game (chosen by Sony) to your digital library. These are almost always high-profile, triple-A titles that are still popular today.

Your subscription also gives you a full one-hour demo of any game in the PlayStation Network library. That’s plenty of time to decide whether or not a game is worth buying. You’ll even get discounts of up to 75% off games in the digital store.

You’ll get 1GB of cloud storage for game saves, so you never need to worry about running out of space for them on your hard drive. Sony may also invite PS Plus members to join exclusive game betas. If you get invited, you’ll be able to test out new games before they hit the market.psn

A 12-month subscription to PS Plus costs just $59.99, which is only $5 a month. You can purchase your subscription online at After you buy, Amazon will send you a special code via email that you can use to unlock your new subscription.

5. PlayStation Network Card

You’ll need funds to buy games and movies on PlayStation Network, but if you’re not comfortable putting your credit card information on there, a prepaid card is the way to go.
